An Examination of Unwanted but Consensual Sexting

Participant Information Sheet
Title: An Examination of the Relationship between Unwanted but Consensual Sexting and Relational Anxiety in Intimate Relationships

You are being invited to take part in a research study. Before you decide, it is important for you to understand why the research is being done and what it will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully and discuss it with others if you wish. Please ask me if there is anything that is not clear or if you would like more information. Take time to decide whether or not you wish to take part.

What is the purpose of this study?
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between unwanted but consensual sexting and relational anxiety in intimate relationships. The study is a continuation of Drouin and Tobin’s (2014) research in which they examined a new sexting behaviour, termed unwanted but consensual sexting. This type of sexting can be defined as consensually engaging in unwanted sexual behaviours in the form of sending and receiving of sexually suggestive or explicit photos, videos, or messages. This research plans to study this new sexting behaviour in more detail.

Why have I been chosen?
You have been invited to take part in this study because you have indicated that you have been or are currently in an intimate relationship, are 18 years of age or older and can speak English.

Do I have to take part?
No.  It is up to you to decide whether or not to take part. If you do decide to take part, you will be given this information sheet to keep and be asked to sign a consent form. You are free to stop taking part in the experiment at any time but will be unable to withdraw data once it has been submitted.

What will happen to me if I take part?
In this study you will be asked to complete an online questionnaire, which we estimate will take you 10 minutes. You will be asked questions about your experiences with sexting and relationships, as well as questions about your gender and sexual orientation.

What are the possible disadvantages and risks of taking part?
In the questionnaire participants will be asked about there sexting experiences which is unlikely to, but might, cause some discomfort. Participants will also be asked about their mental health, which could be distressing. If you are struggling with your mental health, it is recommended that you do not take part in this study.

What are the possible benefits of taking part?
There are no direct benefits to taking part in the study, however, your contribution will help us to further our understanding of this new sexting behaviour.
